Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System

Remove, recoat and re-install Lock 5 East Valves 1 & 2

Trade-Mark Industrial (TMI) successfully finished a project of removing, re-coating and re-installation of 2 valves from 80 feet down in a valve well in St. Catherines, ON. Each valve weighs 28,000 lb, and is used to control the flow of water in and out of the canal.

This demanding project showcases the strength of TMI’s comprehensive, multi-trade capabilities, involving a coordinated effort from: Millwrights, Ironworkers, Hydraulic Techs, Pipe Fitters, ROC Crane, Confined Space Rescue Team, and Heavy Transportation.

To hoist these valves from their normal position 80 feet down in the well, our team used a 250-ton mobile crane from ROC’s fleet; while a TMI worker, in a suspended man basket of a 50-ton mobile crane, assisted with spotting the valve as it was hoisted up the well. After removal, the valve was transported to Trade-Mark's own shop for ultra high-pressure water blasting, sandblasting, and coating.

Handling the logistics of this wide load was another challenge; the valve was 26 ft wide as it sat on the truck. TMI successfully contracted road escorts and secured special permits to travel with this extremely wide load.
